Choosing Binoculars For Hunting

TIP 1 – Why use binoculars at all?

No matter where you hunt, except in thick bush and close quarter shooting, a good pair of binoculars are invaluable. If you hunt mountainous terrain, binoculars are just as important as the rifle.

Most often than not, the success of a hunt in such terrain as above, will depend on having binoculars and knowing how to use them. If you spend a good 30 minutes observing the area around you is far better and more productive than on foot.

A good quality binocular helps a hunter to distinguish the sexes of animals, evaluate trophies etc.

TIP 2 – Best Hunting Binoculars…

What type of binocular do I recommend for hunting? A 7X35mm is a good all rounder.

However, there are some hunting situations where certain binocular types outperform all others. For example, when hunting in open country a binocular is the most used piece of equipment. A 9×35 or 10×42 is ideal.

In mountain country where every pound counts, those big, bulky binoculars are far from ideal. A smaller 8×30 offers an ideal compromise in size and weight.

If 95% of your hunting is in forests or woodlands then compact 8×22 binoculars are adequate for finding/assessing game out to 200 yards.

Is there a need for 8×56 binoculars? Certainly. Nothing beats binoculars of such large diameter for light gathering ability for dawn and dusk hunting from a treestand or blind.

TIP 3 – Binocular buying tips…

Treat the purchase of hunting binoculars the same as when buying a rifle. Always consider where and how you’ll use it most, then choose one which best suits your needs.

Another thing. Don’t skimp on price. Buy the best quality binoculars you can afford and they should last you a lifetime of normal use
