3 Important Gun Safety Tips

TIP 1.

There are many different ways to carry a firearm so that its safe with other hunters around, yet ready for quick use. Muzzle control is most important.

The safest way to carry any firearm is in the ‘ready’ position (using two hands). That is, hold the forearm in one hand and the grip in the other hand. This gives you complete control of the muzzle.

Other ways to carry a firearm are:

• Cradle position (like holding a baby)
• Trail (action open and gun held under one arm – popular with shotgunners)
• Shoulder (gun is rested on the shoulder)
• and of course using a sling.

First and foremost always be conscious of where the muzzle is pointing.

Tip 2.

Gun safety should start at a very early age and what better way to learn with than a .22 rimfire or air gun.

The low noise level and non-existant recoil from both calibres is comfortable for younger shooters to use, learn about weapons handling and develop marksmanship skills.

If a younger person shows interest in the shooting sports, then get them on the right track the first time round.

TIP 3.

Any shooter who does not wear a pair of special shooting glasses with impact-resistant lenses while testing handloads or in competition risks damaging their eyes.

In the event a case separates and hot gas and fragments of brass come back through the action, your eyes are in danger unless protected by glasses.

In some field-type shotguns sports, there is always the danger of copping a stray pellet in the eye.
